SUPREME FARE SEED CYLINDER

 Supreme Fare Seed Cylinder

by David Whitehead

I like to think of myself as thrifty, but my wife says I'm cheap.  So when Barbara asked if I had ever tried the Supreme Fare Seed Cylinders, my answer was, "Absolutely not.  They're too expensive."

"They're $8.49, David!" she said.  "You really are cheap!"

"A two-pound seed cylinder will last about ten minutes at my feeder," I explained.  "That's like"...I tried to calculate the dollars per minute..."Well, it's a lot!"  ( I was an English major, so math isn't my strong suit.)

Barbara insisted that a seed cylinder would last longer than ten minutes, so, determined to prove her wrong, I bought one.  (As I walked out to my feeder, I had this nagging feeling that I had been suckered into buying something and would be $8.49 short for the rest of my life.)

I hefted the weight of the cylinder, unwrapped the package and savored the nutty aroma...still thinking that I was nutty for buying it.  I placed it over the bar of my WBU Dinner Bell feeder, tightened the screw, and waited.

The birds loved it; no question about that.  Cardinals, Carolina Wrens, Nuthatches, Downy Woodpeckers, Red-Bellied Woodpeckers, Catbirds, even a pair of Brown Thrashers came to feast on this delicacy.  I was sure it would be gone by the time I got home the next day.

But it wasn't.  And it was still there the next day.  And the next.  All day on Saturday I sat on the couch with a bag of chips, one eye on the  game, the other on the feeder, watching the birds dine at the seemingly bottomless seed cylinder.  (I remarked to my wife that I'd like to be a bird, as they do nothing all day except sit around and eat.  She made a very sarcastic remark which I shall not detail here.)

That was four weeks ago, and I still have a decent-sized chunk of seed remaining.  (I know it's Fall, and the birds aren't feeding as heavily, but still...four weeks???

I'm sold on these seed cylinders.  They've got  lots of nuts and sunflower chips to attract a wide variety of birds, and they're very versatile.  Each cylinder comes with a mesh bag which can be hung from a tree limb, or it fits perfectly on a Dinner Bell.  We also have these very cool Seed Cylinder Feeders that lend a bit of artistic flair to your feeding station.
